How Registry Integration Helped One Pharmacist Avoid an Unnecessary Vaccine—and Build Patient Trust

Integrated access to the state immunization registry helped a Discount Drug Mart pharmacist avoid an unnecessary pneumococcal vaccine and strengthen patient trust.

The integration of state immunization registry data into community pharmacy software has improved pharmacists’ ability to provide safe, efficient, and patient centered care. Providing pharmacists with direct access to patients’ vaccination records through the pharmacy software system supports evidence-based vaccine recommendations, reduces the risk of unnecessary duplicate vaccinations, and improves the quality of patient counseling.1 The following case illustrates the clinical value of this integration at Discount Drug Mart.

A 37-year-old female patient with a history of hypertension and asthma presented to the pharmacy inquiring about the pneumococcal vaccine. Her primary care physician had recommended the vaccine because asthma increases the risk of pneumococcal disease. Although the patient understood the importance of the vaccination, she was uncertain whether she had previously received the vaccine and could not recall when it had been administered.

The pharmacist accessed the patient’s vaccination history through Discount Drug Mart’s integrated pharmacy software, which is linked to the state immunization registry. The registry confirmed that the patient had received the appropriate pneumococcal vaccine 1 year earlier. Based on current vaccination recommendations, an additional dose was not indicated. Rather than administering an unnecessary vaccine, the pharmacist reviewed the patient’s vaccination history with her and discussed why another pneumococcal vaccine was not recommended at that time and reassured her that she was up to date with current vaccination guidelines. The patient appreciated having immediate access to her vaccination records and expressed confidence in the pharmacist’s recommendation.

The integration of the state immunization registry into Discount Drug Mart’s pharmacy software had improved pharmacy workflow and enhanced patient care beyond individual cases. Pharmacists now have immediate access to patient’s vaccination histories, allowing them to efficiently verify previous vaccinations, identify vaccines that are due, and make more informed recommendations based on current clinical guidelines. Prior to implementation of the registry, pharmacists often needed to contact physicians’ offices or refer patients back to their primary care providers to verify vaccination records. This caused a delay in care and additional work for both patients and health care providers.

The registry has also strengthened patient counseling. Many patients are unable to remember when they last received certain vaccines or mistakenly believe that all vaccines are administered annually. This is especially common with vaccines such as those for respiratory syncytial virus and pneumococcal disease. Access to complete vaccination records allows pharmacists to answer patient questions with confidence, educate them on recommended vaccine schedules, and ensure that recommendations are based on accurate information rather than patient recall.

Another benefit of the integrated registry is the opportunity to improve vaccination rates. When patients come into the pharmacy to receive a vaccine, pharmacists can review their vaccination history to identify any additional vaccines that are recommended based on age, medical conditions, or current vaccination guidelines. Offering these vaccines during the same visit improves convenience for patients, reduces missed vaccination opportunities, and helps keep patients current on recommended vaccinations while minimizing health care visits.

The incorporation of vaccination information into the pharmacy software has substantially improved Discount Drug Mart’s vaccination process. By providing pharmacists with immediate access to accurate vaccine histories, they are now better equipped to provide accurate vaccine recommendations, identify gaps in vaccination history, prevent unnecessary duplicate vaccinations, and administer vaccines when clinically appropriate. Overall, this enhancement has strengthened the pharmacy’s ability to deliver comprehensive patient-centered care and further support the health and well-being of the communities it serves.
