Generic Dexedrine from Mylan Now Available

Mylan’s generic version of Dexedrine is now available at US pharmacies in 3 dosage strengths.

The amphetamine is indicated to treat narcolepsy and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as part of a total treatment program that includes other measures, such as psychological and social treatment, for patients 6 to 16 years.

The generic dextroamphetamine sulfate extended-release capsules are available in 5-mg, 10-mg, and 15-mg strengths.

Pharmacists should know that amphetamines like dextroamphetamine sulfate have a high potential for abuse, and prolonged use can lead to drug dependence. Importantly, amphetamine misuse can lead to serious cardiovascular adverse effects and death.

Side effects associated with dextroamphetamine sulfate include fast heartbeat, decreased appetite, tremors, and headaches. More severe effects include slowing of growth in children, seizures, and eyesight changes.

Dextroamphetamine sulfate can also interact with a number of medications, including antidepressants, antihistamines, and acidifying agents.
