PRESS RELEASE

LAKELAND, Fla., Nov. 11, 2016 — Publix Super Markets is proud to offer free auxiliary aids and services, including qualified interpreters and information in alternative formats, for individuals with limited English proficiency and the disabled.

“We recognize the importance of ensuring our services are accessible for everyone, and our patients’ medication information is communicated effectively,” said Vice President of Pharmacy Fred Ottolino. “Our goal is to provide services that improve our patients’ health.”

Earlier this year, Publix began offering the Accessamed optaPHONIC Digital Audio Label to visually impaired individuals. The technology uses text-to-speech software to record prescription information to an audio label device. The device attaches to the prescription vial or packaging, so patients can play back the recording when they are ready to take their medication, without the need for a barcode scanner or docking station. Patients may request audible prescription labels at their local Publix Pharmacy. Once requested, all future prescriptions will include the device. Large format print is also available upon request.

Publix understands many patients who are deaf, hearing impaired or speech impaired use specialized telecommunications equipment at home or from their cell phones. Publix can communicate with these patients, via hearing loop assistive listening equipment and telecommunication relay service.

For individuals with limited English proficiency, Publix has immediate access to interpreters and translators for the hundreds of different languages spoken in Publix’s market areas.

Publix pharmacy is committed to providing all individuals with access to healthcare services. Accordingly, Publix complies with applicable Federal civil rights laws and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability or sex.
