Clues in the Mouth May Indicate Diabetes

The Academy of General Dentistry said that dentists can play a key role in the early detection of diabetes. Consumer surveys show that 75% of the general population does not know that certain oral symptoms?such as bad breath, bleeding gums, and dry mouth?are often indicators of diabetes. People with diabetes are also more prone to oral infections and periodontal disease. Dentists offer these preventive measures:

? Pay attention to oral symptoms in the mouth

? Discuss concerns about oral and overall health with the dentist

? Provide the dentist with updates regarding changes in medical and dental history

? Visit the dentist at least every 6 months
