Hispanics Especially Susceptible to Diabetes. . .
One in 3 Californians is Hispanic, and, according to a recent report by the University of California at Los Angeles? Center for Health Policy Research, nearly a quarter of Hispanics of retirement age have diabetes. That is twice the percentage of the white senior population that has the disease and 4 times the occurrence in Californians of all ages.
The leading risk factor is obesity. "Living in the United States, we really decrease our exercise, change our diet, and eat a lot of fast food," Carlos Londano, a Union City?based health educator, told the Associated Press. The report was based on data from a telephone survey of more than 55,000 people who self-identified their ethnicity.
