The Catch of the Day?Reduced Risk for CVD

It is well-known that women with type 2 diabetes have an especially high risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The results of a new study, however, indicate that eating fish 5 times a week can cut that risk by 64%, and for those eating fish 2 to 4 times a week, the risk was reduced by 36%. (The American Heart Association currently recommends eating fish twice a week.) Published in the March 2003 issue of Circulation, the study followed more than 5000 women with type 2 diabetes for 16 years. Fish such as tuna, salmon, and sardines, which contain omega-3 fatty acids, are thought to be particularly effective.
