2017 Technology Innovator of the Year Finalists

Tony Guerra, PharmD

Pharmacy Technician Program Chair

Des Moines Area Community College

Ankeny, Iowa

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

My biggest accomplishment has been helping over 6000 people learn the top 200 drugs in 1 year with my audiobook, Memorizing Pharmacology: A Relaxed Approach.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I enjoyed chemistry and wanted to use it to help people and be around others who liked chemistry. Pharmacy seemed to be a great way to do that.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

“Teach less, better” is my teaching philosophy. “The best victories come after the worst setbacks” is a personal entrepreneurial philosophy.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

I think pharmacists have been held back as entrepreneurs because they can’t work as solo practitioners. Once they can, I expect to see an explosion in innovation.

Kim Roberts, PharmD

Project Manager

Community Care of North Carolina

Winston-Salem, North Carolina

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

I am most proud of facilitating pharmacy software vendor adoption of the Pharmacist Care Plan HL7 standard as a vehicle for a new payment model for Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I entered the pharmacy profession because I saw there were a lot of innovative and nontraditional opportunities for practice in a rapidly evolving health care environment.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Building relationships is key for patient trust and overall business success.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

I believe that pharmacists will be able to optimize patient-centered care through integration of technology into pharmacy workflow. Use of interoperability standards will lead to the ability to update and share a team-based, patient-centered pharmacist care plan over time.

Jason Turner, PharmD

Owner and Pharmacist

Moundsville Pharmacy

Moundsville, West Virginia

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

My greatest achievements are the patient-focused programs and services my teams have developed for the pharmacy, the opportunities I have provided our pharmacy staff for personal and professional growth; and the impact that we have had on independent pharmacies across the country in improving their business, changing their workflow, and refocusing on adherence and patient outcomes.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I chose pharmacy because I wanted to help people and make a difference in their health. As a business owner, I also take pride in providing for my employees.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

I believe we should never miss opportunities for personal growth, in working as hard as it takes to achieve an outcome, and in recognizing the value of every member of the team. Over recent years, it has been these behaviors and beliefs that have allowed me and my organization to be successful.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

My vision, like many others’, is to develop a model focused on patient outcomes and a model in which high performers are recognized for their efforts, impact, and outcomes in the lives of patients.
