2017 Health-System Pharmacist of the Year Finalists

Sarah L. Anderson, PharmD, BCPS

Clinical Pharmacy Specialist

Denver Health Medical Center

Denver, Colorado

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Educating patients and seeing them become better able to care and advocate for themselves. It is gratifying to see a patient learn to manage their medications and conditions independently.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I saw the profession of pharmacy as the perfect way to marry my love of chemistry and my passion for helping others.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Your career should be a source of both inspiration and contentment.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

My vision is that all patients, regardless of payer or financial status, have regular access to a clinical pharmacist. Seeing one’s pharmacist should be as routine as seeing any other health care provider.

Paul Lewis, PharmD, BCPS

Clinical Pharmacy Specialist

Johnson City Medical Center

Johnson City, Tennessee

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

As a parent and stepparent, my greatest achievement has been raising respectful and good-natured children. I suppose the same would apply to pharmacy. Every time I watch students and residents progress from being nervous, inexperienced, and self-doubting to being confident, well-rounded, and independent, I reflect on how awesome that feeling is. To me, the greatest achievement anyone can have is watching the success of others whom you have positively affected.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

Pharmacy is a living science, waiting to be explored and tested. It’s that never-ending quest to find the unanswerable question that lured me to the profession.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Albert Einstein is said to have mused, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” I live by that philosophy as a pharmacist, parent, coach, teammate, mentor, preceptor, colleague, and friend. Find what works best for everyone, and you can find a role that maximizes the full potential of each individual.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

I would like to see pharmacy taking a stronger role in health care leadership and in politics. We view health care from a unique perspective, seeing both the clinical aspect and the operational components and how they work together to optimize patient outcomes.

Tran H. Tran, PharmD, BCPS

Associate Professor

Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy

Chicago, Illinois

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

My greatest accomplishment is the role I have played in the success of my students and mentees. I am also proud of the enhancements I have made to the curriculum in the area of substance use disorder

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

To affect the lives of others in a meaningful way as an educator, researcher, and clinician.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Let passion and enthusiasm drive your career choices, and everything will fall into place.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Pharmacists are becoming an essential and critical member of the health care team in all areas of medicine, bringing undeniable value to patients, the multidisciplinary medical team, and health care administrators.
