Epocrates, maker of the popular medical reference app, offers a mobile app to track antimicrobial susceptibility and bacterial resistance data in a pharmacist’s area and allow informed decisions at the point of care. The resistance data, which are typically gathered from in-patient records, are sourced from athenahealth’s cloud-based electronic health record, which includes more than 15 million patient records. The app records bacteria detected in urine, in blood, or on skin, and includes geolocated information as to prevalence within the community. In addition, Epocrates Bugs + Drugs supplies antibiotic drug options that are organized by organism susceptibility. The antibiotic drug options include dosing and contraindication content with links to the complete drug monographs. Content for antibiotic selections are sourced from Epocrates’ drug reference, and, if the user has Epocrates Rx on his or her device, Bugs + Drugs will link to the prescribing reference app. The app provides 1-tap access to a visual listing of bacteria observed in the user’s area. In addition, users can filter listings by specimen type, or change their location to a different zip code if they are working in a different location. Epocrates Bugs + Drugs is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, though users should note that the app requires iOS 7.0 or later.
