As Market Health and Wellness Director for Market 331 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Jack Dalton exceeds expectations.

Jack Dalton, BSPharm, was named Walmart’s Market Health and Wellness Director of the Year in March 2012. Jack’s contributions to his community, Walmart, and the field of pharmacy make it clear that this recognition of his efforts was well deserved.

Spearheading Innovation

Jack currently holds the position of Market Health and Wellness Director for Market 331, located in Las Vegas, Nevada. His market is unique in that it contains all of Walmart’s Las Vegas metro area Neighborhood Market prototype stores.

The concept behind these new stores is to provide patients with an experience that has a “hometown” or “community” feel, much like they would have with an independent pharmacist. The relationships between pharmacists and patients in the Neighborhood Market stores are generally closer, with much higher expectations than those usually found in a typical “big-box” retailer.

Jack’s leadership as Market Health and Wellness Director has been vital to the success of the Las Vegas area Neighborhood Market stores.

A History of Service

Jack’s tenure as a pharmacist began after he was drafted by the US Army in 1966. Jack was assigned to a pharmacy specialist school (the equivalent to today’s pharmacy technician role), and this was the birth of Jack’s passion for patient care and pharmacy. He loved the opportunities that pharmacy brought to the table, and he ultimately decided to pursue pharmacy as a career.

After graduating from Butler University with a bachelor of science in pharmacy in June 1978, Jack eventually joined Walmart on March 23, 1988, as a pharmacy manager. Although he enjoyed this role, his regional manager mentored him into a market manager position, and the rest is Walmart history. He entered into a leadership role and became a pharmacy district manager in August 1990, the position he still holds today.

Community Involvement

Jack has always had a passion for involvement within his community. He has taken on various roles, including past member and president of the Brown County Indiana American Cancer Society and the Brown County Indiana Board of Health. Jack was nominated as a member of the Nevada Board of Pharmacy in November 2011.

Jack has been recognized numerous times for his outstanding work in the field of pharmacy. He was awarded the Dale Carnegie Course Highest Award of Achievement in 1995, Walmart’s David Webb Award for training in 2004, and was most recently named the Market Health and Wellness Director of the Year.

Making an Impact

When asked what inspires him to have a positive impact on the practice of pharmacy, Jack simply responds that it is the pharmacists and associates with whom he works every day. The opportunity to be surrounded by such a talented group of individuals who strive to take care of patients every day is what inspires Jack to make a difference and provide support whenever he can. He also attributes his success to his current leadership, specifically his regional director, Deidre Taylor.

When asked what have been his most memorable experiences over the years, Jack says that the honor of teaching and training his pharmacists to become pillars of the Las Vegas health care community have made his career an awesome experience. Winning the David Webb award and the company’s Market Director of the Year award have also been exciting, and they are experiences Jack says he will not soon forget.

Ms. Piotrowski is senior director, Quality Improvement, Health and Wellness at Walmart. A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, she has worked at Walmart in various roles since 2003.
