Smartphones offer new pharmacists the opportunity to change the way information is stored, shared, and accessed at the point of care. There is no shortage of cleverly designed apps created with pharmacists in mind, but they can be a challenge to find. To help, Pharmacy Careers created App Wrap—the best and most relevant apps for pharmacy students, interns, and practitioners.

This hefty, specialized component of the universally beloved Lexi-Comp suite contains frequently updated, objective information on medication safety issues, special alerts (including FDA warnings), pricing, interactions, dosing, international brand names, and pharmacodynamics and kinetics. Lexi-Drugs also includes Lexi-CALC, a medical calculations tool, at no extra cost.

EpocratesRx, the developer’s free application, contains monographs for more than 3500 brand and generic drugs. The app’s “Pill ID” feature classifies pills by characteristics such as coating, color, and shape, enabling pharmacists to quickly identify “mystery pills” using a simple search interface. The paid version, EpocratesRx Pro, costs $99 a year and includes additional information about OTC medications, herbal and alternative medicines, infectious diseases, and intravenous compatibility.
