Specialty Pharmacy Times Launches Special Oncology Issue

Pharmacy Times publishes the third edition of this new journal with a special focus on oncology trends for the growing specialty pharmacy market.

PLAINSBORO, NJ (June 15, 2011)—Specialty Pharmacy Times has published an inaugural edition that focuses specifically on the growing oncology landscape in specialty pharmacy. This quarterly publication launched in October 2010 and is produced by Pharmacy Times, the leading pharmacy journal in the industry. Specialty Pharmacy Times offers specialty pharmacists peer-written articles focusing on the “real world” of specialty pharmacy practice.

In his editorial, Editor-in-Chief Dan Steiber notes that oncology medication therapy has evolved tremendously in the last decade and has opened the door to the benefits of the specialty pharmacy practice. Calling on key industry leaders to discuss the dynamics of this growth in this issue, he explains, “We delve into the role of the specialty pharmacy, including the integral ethical decisions that specialty pharmacy providers are challenged to make as members of the patient’s health care team.” Articles cover the role of the pharmacist, payer management, medication financial assistance programs, and new oral oncology therapies, among other key topics that focus on “the new gold standard” in specialty pharmacy practice.

In “Oral Oncology Therapies: Specialty Pharmacy’s Newest Challenge,” an expert analysis of clinical management programs for oncology, Randall J. “RJ” Correia, PharmD, writes that specialty drugs are “hot”—and the pipeline for cancer drugs is especially robust. In “The Oncology Landscape: Complexity, Cost, Care, and Coordination,” Rena K. Goins outlines the oncology therapeutic class from many perspectives. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of CVS Caremark Troyen A. Brennan, MD, MPH, JD, reveals the future of specialty pharmacy in the retail setting in his feature article, “CVS Caremark’s View of Specialty Pharmacy Management.”

The Specialty Pharmacy Times Special Oncology Issue also provides columns by leading experts on REMS and specialty nursing, as well as Washington insights and “Viewpoints” by Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy’s president and CEO, Phil Hagerman, on “Oncology: Are You on the Right Path Through the Brewing Storm?”

“This new journal is showing the way in an industry that is growing every day, and we are committed to focusing on the practice and business of specialty pharmacy,” said Mike Hennessy, President, Chairman, and CEO of MJH & Associates, the parent company of Pharmacy Times.

“We are elated with the positive response to our launch of Specialty Pharmacy Times. Our Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board represent the top experts in the field, and they have tapped the ‘best of the best’ to create the most useful publication for the industry,” said Tighe Blazier, Executive Vice President of MJH & Associates.
