The Good Neighbor Pharmacy Provider Network, a program of AmerisourceBergen, awarded 4 member pharmacies for their work in maintaining quality patient care in their stores. The awards were presented at the AmerisourceBergen Healthcare Conference & Exposition, which was held in Las Vegas in July 2007. The 4 awards were given in the following categories: Pharmacist of the Year; Pharmacy of the Year; Home Health Care Pharmacy of the Year; and Diabetes Shoppe ?Living Without Limits.? The Diabetes Shoppe is an offering of AmerisourceBergen which provides marketing and educational support to independent pharmacies that are dedicated to the care and management of diabetes patients.
Each year, the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Pharmacist of the Year award is given to a respected and distinguished leader in the pharmacy profession and the community. This year?s recipient was Harvey E. Schmidt, RPh, president of Schmidt and Sons Pharmacies, which has stores in Blissfield, Clinton, Dundee, and Tecumseh, Mich. Dave Schenck, national director for Good Neighbor Pharmacy, said of Schmidt, ?Harvey is an exemplary role model. As the owner of not 1, but 4, Good Neighbor Pharmacies, and as the mayor of Tecumseh, Mich, he is a very busy man. However, he still takes the time to serve and counsel patients as if each was his one and only patient. Harvey spends not only his professional time but also his personal time and resources to treat his patients like they were his own family members.?
The Pharmacy of the Year award is presented each year to a pharmacy that represents the best that Good Neighbor Pharmacy has to offer and can serve as a model for other stores. This year?s award went to Butler Pharmacy of Point Pleasant, NJ, and owner Norman Beyer. ?Butler Pharmacy is truly a Point Pleasant institution, having been in the community for more than 50 years,? said Schenck. ?When people refer to it, they call it ?The Drug Store.? They don?t even need to mention the name. That is a testament to their vital and longstanding role in the community.? In addition to pharmacy services, the store provides a variety of offerings that include almost everything, from vitamins and home health care products to an extensive selection of gifts.
The Home Health Care Pharmacy of the Year award is bestowed on the pharmacy that demonstrates excellence in providing patients with goods and support staff and also has established a successful home health care business in its community. This year, the honor was given to Northern Pharmacy and Medical Equipment in Baltimore, Md, and owner Marty Mintz. ?If you ask Northern Pharmacy?s patients why they love their pharmacy, they will tell you it is because they can count on Marty and his staff to get the medications they need, even in an emergency,? Schenck said. ?[Northern Pharmacy?s patients] will tell you that the pharmacists there are not strangers?they are like friends who are eager to help,? said Schenck.
The pharmacy award for Diabetes Shoppe ?Managing Diabetes: Living Without Limits? is presented to the pharmacy that is recognized as a leader in providing diabetes care to the community. This year, that pharmacy is Sparrow Pharmacy Plus located in Grand Ledge,Mich. ?Many pharmacies might just hand diabetes patients a blood glucose meter and send them out the door,? said Scott Robinson, director of Patient Care Programs for AmerisourceBergen. ?However, Sparrow Pharmacy Plus has 2 employees who are dedicated exclusively to the care of diabetes patients. They talk to the patients, they listen, they educate, and they monitor trends and changes in their patients? conditions.? The pharmacy is the go-to resource for diabetes care in its community.
Congratulations to all the winners.
