ASHP: Patient Management Services Should Be Covered with Provider Status Laws

Tom Kraus, MHS, JD: A robust provider status law at the state level should include at a minimum the ability for pharmacists to perform patient assessments; the ability to administer vaccinations; the ability to initiate, adjust, and discontinue drug therapy pursuant to a collaborative practice agreement; provide medication management therapy services; and to manage drug therapy for chronic disease states. All of those are elements that allow pharmacists to contribute to the management of patients, that are important to see in provider status.
