Standing Strong: Preventing Osteoporosis
In this podcast, Michele Bellantoni, MD, of Johns Hopkins University, discusses diet and exercise tips for prevention of osteoporosis, with an emphasis on preventive measures that can be taken early in life. Dr. Bellantoni advises increasing calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium intake through dairy and non-dairy foods. She also mentions foods and beverages, such as soda, that can be detrimental to bone health. Other preventive measures include exercise, particularly weight-bearing exercise. Although testing standards recommend bone density analysis at age 65 for women and 70 for men, Dr. Bellantoni explains that having risk factors for osteoporosis can indicate the need for earlier testing. She also discusses pharmacologic treatment, including the age at which medications are prescribed and side effects and potential interactions of various treatments.
