Eliquis

Indication: Eliquis (apixaban) is a factor Xa inhibitor anticoagulant indicated to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. The recommended dose for most patients is 5 mg orally twice daily. The recommended dose is 2.5 mg orally once daily for patients with at least 2 of the following characteristics: 80 years or older, body weight 60 kg or greater, and serum creatinine 1.5 mg/dL or greater. The product carries a boxed warning against an increased risk of stroke in patients who discontinue Eliquis without adequate continuous anticoagulation.

Vascepa

Indication: The FDA approved Vascepa (icosapent ethyl) capsules as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglyceride levels in adult patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. Vascepa is an ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid. Before initiating treatment, lipid levels should be assessed and other causes for hypertriglyceridemia should be managed. A lipid-lowering diet and exercise regimen should be initiated prior to and throughout treatment with Vascepa. Vascepa should be dosed as 2 g twice daily with food, for a total daily dose of 4 g. The capsules should be swallowed whole and never opened, crushed, dissolved, or chewed.

Botox

Indication: The FDA approved Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) for the treatment of overactive bladder with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency in adults who have had an inadequate response to or are intolerant of anticholinergic medication. For the new indication, the recommended total dose is 100 units as 0.5-mL (5 unit) injections across 20 sites into the detrusor. Botox has a boxed warning against the risk of distant spread of toxin effect.

Minivelle

Indication: Minivelle (estradiol transdermal system) is now available by prescription in US pharmacies. Minivelle is an estrogen indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause. Therapy should be initiated at a dose of 0.0375 mg/day applied to the skin twice weekly. The smallest estrogen patch currently available, Minivelle should be placed on a clean, dry place on the lower abdomen or buttocks. It carries a boxed warning against increased risk of endometrial cancer, cardiovascular disorders, breast cancer, and probably dementia.

Ilevro

Indication: Alcon announced the launch of Ilevro (nepafenac ophthalmic suspension), 0.3% , a nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory prodrug indicated for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with cataract surgery. One drop of Ilevro should be applied to the affected eye once daily beginning 1 day prior to cataract surgery, on the day of surgery, and through the first 2 weeks after the operation. An additional drop should be administered 30 to 120 minutes before surgery.
