How to Achieve Your Weight-Loss New Year's Resolution

Article

Are you resolving to lose a few pounds in 2016?

How often do you make the New Year’s resolution of losing weight but fail to follow through?

Here are a couple of tips to help you on the journey:

1. Be specific.

How do you plan to lose weight?

If your answer is with diet or exercise, how are you going to do that?

Using an online or mobile application could be your key to success.

I’ve determined through an online calculator that I need X calories to maintain my weight. I’ve also determined my basal metabolic rate (BMR) and how many calories my organs need per day to keep functioning.

To lose 1 pound, I need to cut down X calories through diet and/or exercise. I also need to make sure I don’t consume less than my BMR to ensure that my organs are not affected.

Through a smartphone app like MyFitnessPal, I will consistently keep track of my food intake and determine how many calories I burn through a specific type of exercise.

2. Be practical.

If your goal is to lose 50 pounds, don’t expect that to happen overnight.

Make a realistic plan toward losing that weight.

Utilizing MyFitnessPal, I will cut down 500 calories per day, so that I can lose 1 pound a week. Alternatively, I can diet and exercise.

I can cut down 250 calories per day through diet and burn 250 calories through exercise. That way I can eat more and not starve myself.

If you’re a couch potato, it’s impractical to say that you will walk a couple miles a day, every day, so make small adjustments to your lifestyle.

If you work on the 3rd floor, consider taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car at the farthest parking space and force yourself to walk the distance to get to and from your car.
