As part of American Pharmacists Month (APhM), students from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy flooded a pedestrian walkway in Albuquerque to raise awareness about the importance and skills of pharmacists.

The event, “White Coats Across Montano,” encouraged commuters to take advantage of their pharmacists’ abilities. The pharmacy students carried whiteboards with messages about pharmacists—including the theme of APhM: “Know Your Pharmacist, Know Your Medicine”—on October 1, 2015.

“We want to encourage patients to talk to their pharmacists and ask questions about their medications,” said pharmacy student and event organizer Gabriela Cabanilla in a school press release.
Cabanilla added that pharmacists can help reduce prescription drug abuse by educating patients on safe and appropriate use of medications.

Later this month, University of New Mexico pharmacy students will host a community outreach day involving health screenings, flu shots, poison prevention information, and prescription drug abuse education at schools, senior centers, and nursing homes.

Pharmacists are encouraged to promote the profession on social media using the hashtag #ThankAPharmacist and tagging @Pharmacy_Times.
