2017 Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists

Joshua Borer, PharmD

President

Rex Pharmacy, Inc

Atlantic, Iowa

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

In 2016, our pharmacy was recognized as the Health Mart Pharmacy of the Year by McKesson for our efforts in transitioning toward an outcomes-based focus. Although some work remains, I’m proud to lead a team that is motivated and focused on patient health.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I entered the pharmacy profession because I like people and was motivated by family friends who owned our hometown pharmacy. I enjoyed watching them interact and engage with their patients. I’ve met so many outstanding pharmacists who have pushed me to do more and make a difference.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

  • Make a difference in the communities we serve.
  • Advance the team—support each team member in their success.
  • No complacency—continue to grow and improve.
  • Be happy!

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Pharmacy has the potential to fill many gaps in the care continuum. My vision is for an industry that focuses on filling those gaps by collaborating with patients, providers, and other stakeholders to improve outcomes for patients.

Stephanie Smith Cooney, PharmD

President

Gatti Pharmacy

Danville, Pennsylvania

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

I embarked on my pharmacy ownership career 1 year after graduating pharmacy school. I had a lot to learn and had many challenges to overcome. I’m particularly proud of leading transitions in my pharmacy and developing my team into an all-star group, and I’m excited about the new patient care opportunities that I envisioned that are finally coming to life.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

As a second-generation pharmacist, I spent a lot of time in a pharmacy as a child, and the environment really appealed to me. I love the dedication to patient care and the necessary attention to detail that community pharmacists demonstrate, along with the variety of available opportunities in this setting.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

As a pharmacist, I take very seriously the opportunity to help improve the lives of the patients we serve. My goal is to innovate changes that allow us to take better care of our patients in our current health care environment. I also consider it important that I’m able to balance my family life with my professional life and to mentor others on how to strike this balance.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

I am very excited about the changing role of the pharmacist from a traditional dispensing role to a role focused much more on direct patient care. There are many places in our health care system in which pharmacists can have a direct impact, and pharmacists are continually becoming more involved as the innovators of patient care.

Wen Wilson, RPh

Pharmacist, Owner

Healthcite Pharmacy

Bradenton, Florida

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Wherever I’ve worked, I’ve created innovative solutions to help the local community. I’ve worked with local health authorities and all pharmacies in the county, provided smoking cessation services, and administered at-home medication therapy management review and pharmacy care plans.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I wanted to have a positive effect on the health of my patients and be an integral part of primary health care in the community.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

To achieve your goals requires careful planning, dedication, hard work, and collaboration. This applies to not only pharmacists, but to our patients as well.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Telepharmacy will play a key part in community care as patients become more empowered to manage their own health at home, and we will be more integrated with secondary care. With the use of technology, we will become more like consultants and less like dispensers of medicines and become specialists in new drug therapeutic classes.
