Educational Objectives

After completing this continuing education program, the participant will be able to:

  • Examine the use of insulin, including pharmacokinetic parameters to reach glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
  • Identify potential patient barriers and recommended solutions to initiating insulin therapy to optimize A1C goals.
  • Explore the role of new long-acting basal insulins in patients with T2DM and evaluate risk of hypoglycemia associated with each.
  • Analyze the role of the pharmacist in educating patients about proper insulin administration technique and self-monitoring.
  • Illustrate an educational strategy that includes a demonstration of proper administration technique to patients and support them with initiating insulin when appropriate.
