African and Caribbean nations ravaged by the HIV epidemic will be able to obtain low-cost generic versions of 2 key antiretroviral drugs under a deal brokered by former President Bill Clinton's AIDS Foundation.
Under the arrangement, poor countriesincluding Swaziland, Lesotho, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascarwill get access to generic efavirenz and abacavir at prices that have been estimated at $240 per patient per year.
Aspen Pharmacare and Indian generic drug manufacturers Ranbaxy, Cipla, and Strides Acrolabs will supply efavirenz. Cipla will also supply abacavir.
