The nation's pharmacists consider widespread use of generic drugs as key to the success of the new Medicare prescription drug program for the elderly, according to the results of a nationwide survey that underscores pharmacy's commitment to generic substitution.
Researchers for AARP found that a solid 68% of the >500 pharmacists surveyed support the substitution of generics in most cases, and that one third of them (32%) favor generic substitution in all cases where a generic is available.
The overwhelming majority of pharmacists85%agreed that promoting the use of generics will be important for the success of the new Medicare program. Many pharmacists, however, said that they need resources, such as brochures and handouts, to help advise their patients about the new benefit.
