December 11, 2008—Greenstone, Pfizer's generic
pharmaceutical subsidiary, announced that it introduced
amoxicillin tablets in the 875-mg strength. The
tablets are indicated in the treatment of infections
due to susceptible strains of designated microorganisms
in the following conditions: infections of the
ears, nose, and throat; infections of the genitourinary
tract; infections of the skin and skin structure; infections
of the lower respiratory tract; gonorrhea, acute
uncomplicated; and Helicobacter pylori eradication to
reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

December 16, 2008—Watson Pharmaceuticals
announced that its subsidiary, Watson Laboratories
Inc, received FDA approval for its abbreviated new
drug application for galantamine hydrobromide
extended-release capsules, eq to 8, 16, and 24 mg
(galantamine base). These capsules are indicated for
the treatment of mild-to-moderate dementia of the
Alzheimer's type. Galantamine hydrobromide is a
reversible, competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor.
The recommended starting dose is 8 mg/day. The
dose should be increased to the initial maintenance
dose of 16 mg/day after a minimum of 4 weeks—a further increase to 24 mg/day should then be
attempted.

announced the introduction and availability of
Pravastatin Sodium Tablets USP, 80 mg. With this new
strength, Teva now offers the tablets in 10-, 20-, 40-,
and 80-mg strengths. Therapy with pravastatin sodium
tablets should be considered in those individuals at
increased risk for atherosclerosis-related clinical events
as a function of cholesterol level, the presence or
absence or coronary heart disease, and other risk factors.
It is one of a class of lipid-lowering compounds,
the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, which reduce cholesterol
biosynthesis.

acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without
aura and (2) the acute treatment of cluster headache
episodes. It is not for use in the management of
hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
