Pharmacists are in a position to help educate patients about colorectal cancer. Walgreens has partnered with the Colon Cancer Alliance and Salix Pharmaceuticals to sponsor a national campaign to raise awareness about and increase screenings for colorectal cancer.
The program is multitiered. A major component will be providing informational brochures emphasizing early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer at >5600 Walgreens locations and online. The program will provide continuing education for Walgreens'>20,000 pharmacists to help them become a resource for patients who have questions about screenings. Pharmacy staff members also will receive pocket-sized guidelines for colonoscopy procedures endorsed by the major patient advocacy and professional organizations for quick and easy reference, according to the drugmaker.
Rounding out the campaign is a toll-free help line operated by the Colon Cancer Alliance. Staff members are available to answer questions and offer further assistance. For more information, call 877-422-2030.
