Omnicell Inc's medication-use technology has helped increase patient safety, reduce costs, and improve pharmacy staff productivity at the 248-bed Chambersburg Hospital in Chambersburg, Pa.
"To fill medication orders, we would start the process the night before, with technicians filling the medication delivery carts. A pharmacist would check to verify manually that it was the right medication for the right patient. The process took 7 hours," explained Dave Grant, the hospital's director of pharmacy.
Now, the hospital has implemented Omnicell's WorkflowRx software to help dispense 1200 patient medication doses in about 90 minutes. It is barcode- controlled to discourage dispensing errors. The SafetyPak system packages each patient's oral solid medications individually and applies a bar code. Grant said that as a final check to help ensure that patients are getting the correct medication, the new technology permits bedside scanning by the nurse prior to administering the medication.
