The long-term care industry is part of a pilot project to test the first standards for electronic prescribing (e-prescribing). These preliminary standards may be adopted as the final standards that will create an electronic transmission system of prescription information for the Medicare Part D prescription drug program.
During the pilot project, 4 grantee teams will gauge the impact of e-prescribing data transmission systems on patient safety and quality of care. The project entails testing several systems of electronic data transmission standards and deciding how efficiently and effectively medication orders and medicationrelated information can be sent and received by the providers and pharmacies that are involved in e-prescribing for Medicare Part D beneficiaries.
The $6-million project will be administered jointly by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The project will continue throughout the year.
