AmerisourceBergen Corp and Allscripts are working together to support the adoption and connectivity of electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) in response to provisions of the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) and the recommendations of the Commission on Systemic Interoperability for connecting patients' health information.
Using the companies' health care solutions, the partnership will concentrate on supplying health care providers with authorized electronic access to patient medication records and drug monitoring across all fields of health care. The groundbreaking solution is expected to be an early step toward developing the interoperable medication record, which will improve clinical, financial, and operational efficiencies in the US health care delivery system.
Under the terms of alliance, AmerisourceBergen is acquiring the right to issue licenses for the entire portfolio of Allscripts clinical software products (eg, TouchWorks Rx+ and ePrescribing applications) for distribution to Amerisource Bergen customers. TouchWorks Rx+ allows a medical group to commence with e-prescribing and then easily transition to a complete electronic health record, depending on the needs of the medical group.
The Allscripts solutions will aid pharmacies, physicians, and health systems in meeting the terms of the new Health and Human Services (HHS) regulations supporting e-prescribing for Medicare Part D. The MMA now requires pharmacists participating in the new prescription drug benefit to support e-prescribing. HHS is creating standards and steps to promote the adoption of e-prescribing.
