Meditation Lowers Numbers

Individuals practicing transcendental meditation daily may lower their blood pressure, according to a study reported in the American Journal of Hypertension (April 2005). The researchers reached this conclusion after an 8-month study involving 111 African-American teens on the brink of becoming adults with hypertension.

The results of the study showed that two 15-minute meditation sessions a day generated a 21% increase in the ability of teens'blood vessels to dilate. The participants who did not use meditation experienced an average 4% decrease in blood vessel dilation over the study period. More in-depth studies are needed to evaluate the long-term impact of meditation on heart disease risk.
