Program Targets Older Americans

The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) has launched a campaign targeting diabetes among the elderly. The core of the program "Small Steps, Big Rewards"focuses on simple lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise to help reduce the risk of serious diabetes complications including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and amputations, noted James Gavin, III, MD, PhD, chairman of the NDEP.

The initiative includes public service announcements, a publicity campaign, pamphlets with diabetes information and prevention tips, and tools to help individuals begin a weight-loss program. For more information, visit the NDEP Web site at www.ndep.nih.gov, or call 800-438-5383.
