The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy's (NAPB) Verified Accredited Wholesale Distributors (VAWD) program is underway. The VAWD program will accredit wholesale distributors whose policies and operations meet the VAWD criteria and comply with state and federal laws. Applicants for VAWD accreditation will go through a criteria compliance review, licensure verification process, an inspection, and screening through NAPB's clearinghouse.
In an effort to provide educational programming and consulting to pharmaceutical distributors, the NABP has recognized Health Pathways Integrity Solutions Division as supply chain educator. The pharmaceutical distribution industry has undergone major consolidation in recent years. As a result, new distributors focused on niche needs have grown.
The increase has caused a proliferation of wholesale licenses. The validation of these new distributors has been left to the states through licensing. The expansion of distributors may be fueling diversion and has increased the chance for counterfeit products in the marketplace. Therefore, states boards of pharmacy are increasing efforts to regulate distributors more tightly.
"NABP recognizes that a critical component of the VAWD program is an effective educational program for the personnel of wholesale distributors and is appreciative of Health Pathways' foresight in developing such a program to respond to a market need," said Carmen Catizone, NABP's executive director.
