Good eating habits rank high with medication in controlling type 2 diabetes, concluded the authors of a study reported recently in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. For the study, the researchers interviewed 89 individuals with type 2 diabetes. They compared the food habits of those participants who were successful in controlling their blood sugar levels with those who were not. The researchers compiled a list of 12 dos and 3 don'ts. The dos included avoiding sugary foods, eating less fat, and planning meals. The don'ts all involved dining out and included not eating at buffet, chain, and fast-food restaurants; not selecting high-fat or high-carbohydrate foods; and not choosing high-fat sources of protein.
