Diabetes Update for Pharmacists: The Kidneys’ Role in Blood Glucose Regulation

The second in a series, this activity is designed to help pharmacists better understand how glucose is regulated within the body, how recent findings are related to mechanisms of glucose regulation in the kidneys, and how new and emerging pharmacotherapies that address these renal mechanisms may affect the care of patients with diabetes. The course provides insight into the kidneys’ role in normal human physiology, the mechanisms by which they contribute to glucose regulation, and the potential impact of glucose imbalance on the kidneys.
Upon completing the program, participants should be able to:
Examine evidence detailing the role of the kidneys in maintaining glucose balance.
Review the physiologic mechanisms involved in achieving glucose homeostasis by the kidneys.
Explain the effects of hyperglycemia on the kidneys and its consequences.
