What Is Asthma?

APRIL 17, 2012
In this podcast, Linda Austin, MD, interviews Ronald J. Teufel, MD, both of the Medical University of South Carolina, on the nature of childhood asthma, medications to treat the condition, and methods to prevent attacks.

Dr. Teufel, a pediatric hospitalist, explains the recurrent nature of asthma, as well as some of the common attack triggers. He notes that preventing asthma can be difficult; however, parents and children can take steps to avoid attacks. Using smoking as an example, he suggests several ways to address attack triggers. He describes several common preventive and emergency treatment options, and the importance of daily use of medication. In addition, he details the process of asthma care as a relationship between parents, children, and family physicians.
