Risk Factors for Hepatitis C

FEBRUARY 24, 2012
A podcast from Mayo Clinic Medical Edge discusses risk factors for contracting hepatitis C. Before 1992, when effective screening tools were developed, blood transfusions and blood products posed the greatest risk of transmitting hepatitis C. Today, injecting drugs is the top risk factor, and anything that can lead to the exposure of other peoples’ blood is a risk as well. Hugging, kissing, and sharing silverware, however, pose no risk of transmission. Nonetheless, given that treatments for hepatitis C are not 100% effective, prevention is extremely important.
