New Glaucoma Surgery

MAY 16, 2012
In this podcast, Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist Rajesh Shetty, MD, discusses the symptoms and causes of and treatments for glaucoma. He touches on risk factors for the condition, including the propensity for certain ethnic groups to develop the disease, as well as the effect of one's family history on the likelihood of developing it. Treatment can include eye drops and laser treatment, according to Dr. Shetty. In cases where eye drops or lasers do not relieve pressure, Dr. Shetty explains other surgical options as well as their potential complications. He also explains potential side effects of drugs such as blood thinners. He also explains a newer approach, called the Trabectome procedure, which opens the eye’s internal drain by cleaning it. Although the procedure can reduce pressure, Dr. Shetty explains that many patients need to continue eye drop therapy even after undergoing it.
