Asthma Treatment

In this podcast, Linda Austin, MD, interviews Ronald J. Teufel, MD, both of the Medical University of South Carolina, about using inhaled corticosteroids to treat childhood asthma and the importance of asthma treatment in general.
 
Dr. Teufel, a pediatric hospitalist, discusses the common inhaled corticosteroids used to treat childhood asthma. He addresses concerns about long-term use of steroids, particularly in children and explains how inhaled asthma medications differ from oral or intravenous steroids. He notes that several studies have found minimal negative effects from asthma medications. In addition, he explains the importance of daily medication use and suggests strategies to ensure adherence.
