About 14 million people in the United States have visual impairments, although many problems can be controlled with corrective lenses, Dr. Saaddine says. Many problems, particularly serious diseases like diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, or glaucoma, develop later in life. Dr. Saaddine explains preventive practices for vision health, although she notes that exams are critical to detecting problems early. She explains several treatment options for various diseases.
