Senate Confirms Seema Verma as CMS Administrator

Several health care organizations applauded the pick.

After a Senate vote, Indiana-based health care consultant Seema Verma will become the new administrator of the CMS.

While Verma's appointment has drawn expected fire from Democrats, who have criticized her answers to questions in confirmation hearings, the move was lauded by members of the GOP finance committee, who cite her work in Indiana. Verma has been pivotal in designing a system in Indiana that relies on health savings accounts to apply toward deductibles for health care.

Several health care agencies reacted to the news, with The Partnership for Quality Home Healthcare — a coalition of home health providers – applauding the confirmation. They issued this statement: “The Partnership fully supports the confirmation of Ms. Verma as CMS’ next Administrator and stands ready to work with her to implement patient-focused policy solutions that reduce regulatory burdens and increase access to home health care services."

Keith Myers, chairman of the Partnership for Quality Home Healthcare, added, “Ms. Verma’s experience in the health care field as well as her impressive leadership background make her uniquely poised to strengthen the Medicare home health benefit.”

ADVI CEO Marc Samuels issued the following statement about the appointment: "I congratulate Seema Verma on her confirmation as Administrator of the CMS. Ms. Verma's experience and vision for a more patient-centered health care system is just what this administration needs to take on today's tough policy issues. As someone who has a great deal of experience in and working with federal and state government and a long history tackling CMS' thorniest coverage and payment issues, I am excited to work with Ms. Verma and her team as CMS ushers in a new era of health care reform."
