A Grammy-nominated singer is claiming a CVS pharmacist initially declined to fill a painkiller prescription in the middle of the night “because of the neighborhood.”

Kelly Price told CBS2 she thinks the pharmacist did not want to provide the pain medication because of the low-income area where the CVS was located in Carson, California.

It took 30 minutes of debate before the R&B singer convinced the pharmacist to fill the prescription, according to Price. She said she visited the 24-hour CVS around 1 a.m. to get medication for a dental procedure.

“I was offended for the people of this neighborhood,” Price told CBS2. “I was offended for anybody who lives in a neighborhood that may not be considered the upper echelon where expensive homes are, or where 6- and 7-figure earners live.”

CBS2 received a statement from CVS that said: “It is not the store’s or the company’s policy to decline to fill certain prescriptions after midnight.”

Price also received an apology from CVS via phone on May 13, 2015. The pharmacy corporation said it was looking into the situation to determine whether discipline would be warranted for the pharmacist involved.

The singer told CBS2 she hopes other customers do not have the same experience she had.

“What if it were somebody that walked in and it was a life-or—death situation, and they were denied the ability to fill a prescription just because of the location of the store?” she said.
