The political fund-raisers for
the Generic Pharmaceutical
Association (GPhA) collected
more than $37,000 to support
pro-industry candidates in the 2006 elections, according
to documents on file at the Federal Election
Commission.
Less than 10 weeks before Election Day, GPhA's Political
Action Committee (PAC) had contributed $13,500 to the
campaigns of 10 House and Senate candidates, including
such supporters of the generic drug industry as Sen
Edward Kennedy (D, Mass), Sen Trent Lott (R, Miss), and Sen
Debbie Stabenow (D, Mich).
Although the PAC supported candidates from both
parties, 70% of its money went to Republican congressional
hopefuls. Also among those on the receiving
end of the association's campaign aid was Rep Nathan
Deal (R, Ga), the incoming chairman of the House Energy
and Commerce Health Subcommittee.
