WE MOVE recently launched the
Adult Movement Disorder Treatment
and Rehabilitation Directorya one-of-a-kind on-line resource that provides
a public health-access directory
of health care professionals in the
United States. The directory includes
neurologists and physiatrists who
diagnose and manage patients with
multiple movement disorders.
Movement disorders, which impact
>40 million US adults and children,
include Parkinson's disease; essential
tremor; tics and Tourette's syndrome;
dystonia; tremor; and spasticity associated
with stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple
sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and traumatic
brain injury.The nonprofit organization
WE MOVE is dedicated to heightening
awareness of movement disorders and
providing patients and physicians with
resources that are designed to enhance
treatment and quality of life. It is not
uncommon for an individual living with a
movement disorder to go undiagnosed
or to be treated improperly.
"WE MOVE's Adult Movement
Disorder Treatment and Rehabilitation
Directory is an important step forward
for all people living with movement
disorders," said Abbey S. Meyers, president
of the National Organization of
Rare Disorders. "The difficulty of
obtaining a proper diagnosis is often
compounded by the inability of local
practicing physicians to determine the
differences between movement disorders
so they can be properly diagnosed
and treated. Physicians who
diagnose and treat movement disorders
can tell the difference, and they
know the implications of each disorder
on the patient and family. Finding
these professionals is a major challenge,
and the Treatment and
Rehabilitation Directory will simplify
that task for everyone."
