The ValiMed system is now operational
at Henry Ford Hospital, a 903-bed
tertiary care facility in Detroit, Mich. The
system will perform end-product testing
of compounded intravenous medication
in the hospital's pharmacy
department, as well as validation of
returned narcotics in its operating room
suites and nursing units. Developed by
CDEX Inc, the ValiMed medication-verification
system provides clinicians with
a fast, cost-effective, and simple tool to
further guarantee medication safety by
validating that medications are properly
compounded.
ValiMed works by using a patent-pending
technology to verify compounded
doses of high-risk medications
before dispensing. The solution
creates an additional level of safety in
the medication-dispensing process, and
it also is used to validate narcotic
returns as well as to identify counterfeit
medications.
"At Henry Ford, our top priority is
patient safety," said Ed Szandzik, director
of the hospital's pharmacy. "The
ValiMed product strengthens our dispensing
process by adding another
level of safety to ensure [that] compounded
medications are accurately
verified and narcotic returns are properly
handled in the pharmacy."
