Presented by The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, in Collaboration with the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), and developed through a strategic educational facilitation by Gullapalli and Associates, LLC

OVERVIEW: This educational initiative utilizes a multifocal educational approach, featuring an integrated series of interventions for participants to access a variety of formats, tools, and best practices guidelines specific to interacting with patients with gastrointestional (GI) disorders. Over a period of 12 months, participants will have access to multiple programs designed and developed to provide educational content in a practical format.
Collaborative Alliance Research Education (CARE) Initiative: GI Pharmacy Care Model is a multi-interventional educational program providing relevant and concise information about the pharmacy care model and its application to management of GI disorders prevalent in community practice environments based on a series of 3 regional meetings held in 2009. This initiative was designed to:
  • Explain comorbidity and symptom overlap between irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), chronic constipation, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and clinical consequences of polypharmacy.
  • Identify the role of the pharmacist in determining the appropriateness of selfcare or medical referral in the treatment of GI disorders (chronic constipation, GERD, IBS-C).
  • Integrate pharmacy care strategies to educate, counsel, and monitor patients to optimize therapeutic outcomes associated with GI disorders (chronic constipation, GERD, IBS-C).
This monograph contributes to the blended learning of the overall initiative by providing a case-based review and integration of the key learnings captured during the live regional meetings of this initiative. The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy takes responsibility for content, quality, and scientific integrity of this continuing educaton (CE) activity. Intended Audience: This activity is designed for community and institutional pharmacists who interact or are in the position to interact, with patients having GI motility concerns.
