A Month of Mustaches

NOVEMBER 25, 2013
MustacheWe are almost through Movember!

Everywhere I look I see mustaches … literally! November has become a month in which clean-shaven men take on the brave task of Movember. In an effort to raise awareness about men's health, men are growing mustaches and embracing their 5-o’clock shadows. Similar to efforts to raise awareness of breast cancer, this November tradition has become a global movement.

Movember was started in Australia about 10 years ago by a group of friends (“mates,” there) who decided to revive the old-fashioned trend of growing mustaches. When they realized the fun they were having, they started raising money the next year, and using the money to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.

This month, I registered to help the cause. Although I am happy that I cannot grow a mustache, I am actively participating in Movember as a “MoSista.” I’m participating to help support the men in my life as an advocate for men’s health awareness. Regular prostate and testicular cancer screenings are important. The more attention they get, the better. So all you men out there, listen up! I encourage you to make that appointment today to get poked and prodded before the woman in your life can say, “I told you so!”

Who is your favorite man with facial hair? Santa? Chuck Norris? Einstein? Tom Selleck? Mine is my Dad, who also happens to have been a barber for more than 30 years. Thanks, Dad, for grooming all those ‘staches!
