Published Online: Thursday, August 8, 2013

PRESS RELEASE

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has published the tenth edition of its popular Pediatric Injectable Drugs, widely known as the “Teddy Bear Book.”

Pediatric Injectable Drugs, Tenth Edition , edited by Stephanie J. Phelps, Pharm.D., BCPS; Tracy M. Hagemann, Pharm.D., FCCP, FPPAG; Kelley R. Lee, Pharm.D., BCPS; and A. Jill Thompson, Pharm.D., BCPS, is an invaluable resource for any pharmacist who works with children.

The Teddy Bear Book has provided reliable, evidence-based information specific to pediatric injectable drugs for more than two decades. With the publication of this new edition, the reference now covers 238 drugs commonly used in the treatment of infants and children, including 20 that are new to this edition. The reference covers neonates through adolescent children and includes age-specific dosing and administration guidelines. As with previous editions, the structure of each of the drug monographs covers the following areas:
  • Brand names,
  • Medication error potential,
  • Contraindications and warnings,
  • Infusion-related cautions,
  • Dosage (age specific),
  • Dosage adjustment in organ dysfunction,
  • Maximum dosage,
  • Additives,
  • Suitable diluents,
  • Maximum concentrations,
  • Preparation and delivery,
  • I.V. push,
  • Intermittent infusion,
  • Continuous infusion,
  • Other routes of administration, and
  • Comments.
Also included is a comprehensive list of abbreviations and more than 4,800 references. This is the only pediatric parenteral drug reference that covers limited fluid amounts, maximum doses, and limited intravenous sites—issues that pediatric practitioners often face with their patient population, from neonates through adolescents.
