With the 100-Year Anniversary of Insulin Discovery, Experts Look to the Future of Diabetes Care

Pharmacists are essential team members for the education of patients with diabetes, especially around injection technique for patients using injectable medications, such as insulin.

In an interview with Pharmacy Times, Henry Anhalt, DO, vice president and global head of medical and clinical affairs for diabetes care at BD, discussed the history of diabetes care and what he sees for the future.

Anhalt said the innovation over the past century in diabetes treatments has been incredible, with advances in medication therapy and better ways to deliver those medications. Anhalt added that pharmacists are essential team members for the education of patients with diabetes, especially around injection technique for patients using injectable medications, such as insulin. Finally, Anhalt said the future of diabetes care looks bright, with developments on the horizon for new therapies as well as semi- or fully-automated insulin delivery devices that lift the burden for patients.
